When Your Brand Finally Catches Up to Your Business
Clairey Bakes case study
Some businesses have everything going for them, except a brand that looks like it.
That was Claire Sharp. Known locally as "the Cookie Lady," Claire had been baking cookies professionally for seven years by the time we started working together. She had a loyal following, a distinctive personality, and a product that genuinely stood apart: beautiful and delicious cookies made from scratch with quality ingredients.
She also had a logo she'd never loved. A few of them, actually. She'd tried Fiverr, she'd tried Canva. But every time, something was off. It was never quite right. Her logo felt like the one part of her that was missing. Lagging behind the growth she was experiencing everywhere else.
So Claire did what you do when you know something isn't working but you can't figure out what it needs: she decided to invest in doing it properly.

how strategy addressed a unique branding problem
Here's what was unique about this project: The Clairey Bakes brand wasn't struggling. The visuals were struggling.
A business with a weak brand needs a lot of strategy work first. We have to dive deep to get clarity on who they are, who they serve, what they stand for. Claire had already done that work, just not on paper. Seven years of showing up consistently had given her a clear identity, a real community, and a voice that people recognized and trusted.
She didn't need me to discover her brand. She needed someone to truly see it, understand the vision, and build a visual identity that finally matched it.
even when a client comes to me for design, i always begin with strategy.
Not because I think clients don't know their own business. In fact, I know they are the ones that now it best and I've found the process of articulating it almost always reveals something useful.
For Claire, the strategy session confirmed what she already knew about her values, her audience, and her offer. But it also gave us a shared language to work with and surfaced a theme that would end up driving the entire design.
Over and over throughout our Discovery session, Claire kept returning to a specific them: light. A bright spot in someone's day. A box of sunshine on your kitchen counter. The feeling of getting something small and unexpected that makes an ordinary moment a little better.
She was describing an experience. Clairey Bakes makes really good cookies, but it's not about being indulgent or fancy or exclusive. It's about sharing with people you love, treating yourself just for the fun of it, and bringing a little bit of light into people's life with something sweet.
This theme became the center of Clairey Bakes brand strategy and drove the visual directions for the brand.

The moment it all came together
During our second meeting, the Direction Session, I present the completed Brand Strategy—a defined set of core elements putting words to their Purpose, People, Positioning, and Personality. As I wrapped up presenting the pieces of Clairey Bakes' Brand Strategy, Claire made this comment:
"I'm trying so hard not to interrupt you, but like I just feel like you're getting it. I feel like I didn't tell you any of this stuff, but you're putting it together for me, and this is like exactly how I feel... I really do want to be like friends with these people. I really do want them to be excited. I really do want them to just have that moment where their day is just a tiny bit better because that cookie was just so good."
This moment meant so much to me, because it's what I aim for with every client. I want them to feel heard. To feel understood. Like I am an extension of their business brain to execute in design the things that they can't. It's a signal to me that I'm doing things right because only then can I truly serve business well in my design for them.
Two Visual Directions and the surprise choice
Then came the visual direction reveal. After presenting the Brand Strategy, I show the client two moodboards and discuss directions we could take the brand design based on the strategy we'd just reviewed. The first option was closer to what Claire had originally described wanting: colorful, playful, a little more expected for a custom cookie brand. The second, which I'd developed directly from the "sunshine" theme that emerged in strategy, was more focused — pinks and oranges, warm and bright, with a retro-tinged joy that felt like it had always existed somewhere and we'd just found it.
Claire surprised herself by choosing the second one.
This felt like another huge win. This direction was not something led by personal taste. It didn't show up clearly on her Pinterest board. But it still felt right because of the intentional way it was developed.

A brand that fits the business
The final Clairey Bakes identity is warm, joyful, and impossible to ignore. The wordmark uses chunky, rounded lettering with a fun capital R — playful but intentional, immediately readable, with a personality that matches Claire's own. The small star tip icing detail worked into the dot of the i was one of Claire's favorites: it's a nod to her decorating work without being too literal about it. The color palette is bright without being chaotic, sweet without being kitschy. It makes you lighter before you've read a single word.
Claire's business goals extend well beyond decorated cookies. She's expanding into gourmet cookie boxes and shipping nationwide after moving into a commercial kitchen. With this in mind, the brand needed to carry real weight. It needed to look like her product was worth what it costs. A full suite of logos, a complete color and typography system, custom brand icons, and a cookie box package design gave the identity the range needed to grow with the business.
she walked away with a complete brand identity, not just a logo.
Her Signature package included a set of ready-to-use custom collateral, including a business card, a thank-you and promotional card designed to go inside every box, social media profile styling, a Canva brand kit, and three Canva templates.
From Claire:
"Working with Allie at Pennington Design Studio was hands-down one of the best investments I've made in Clairey Bakes. The part that stuck with me most was was the early discovery/vision conversations, she actually listened and pulled a brand out of my head that I couldn't have articulated myself. It never felt like a generic template getting slapped on my business; it felt like Allie took the time to understand who I am and translated that into something visual.
Before this process, my brand felt like a bunch of pieces that didn't quite talk to each other; cute, but scattered. Now everything feels cohesive and unmistakably "me." I look at my packaging, my page, my socials, and it all just fits in a way it didn't before.
I'd recommend Pennington Design Studio to any small business owner who's outgrown the DIY-logo phase and wants a brand that actually reflects who they are, not just what's trendy. Especially if you're a founder like me who knows your product but struggles to translate your personality into a visual identity, Allie is who you want in your corner."
Clairey Bakes is dropping gourmet cookies each month and hosting decorating classes for the holiday season. Don't miss out!
The Takeaway for Your Business
If your business is doing well but your visuals have never quite felt right, you're not imagining it and you're not alone. It's one of the most common places small business owners get stuck: the brand itself is strong, but the identity doesn't reflect it, and there's a confidence gap as a result.
When it might be the right time to invest in brand design:
You've been in business for a while, but your logo was made quickly, or made by you
You've outgrown your visuals. The business has evolved, but the brand looks like a rookie.
You feel embarrassed or hesitant to hand someone your business card or send them to your website
You're raising your prices (or want to) but it doesn't look like you're worth that much
You've tried to DIY it more than once and keep ending up dissatisfied
You need a process that takes what you've built and translates it into something you're finally proud to put in front of people.
